About the Show

You don’t have to be a Shakespeare nerd to enjoy this night of shrewd showmanship and shameless shenanigans; of songs, sonnets, and soliloquies; of musical monologues and a master of revels.

Thank you for joining us as we plumb the depths of Shakespeare’s influence on literature, life, and musical theater.

With songs from musicals based on Shakespeare (West Side Story, Hair, Something Rotten) plus trivia, games, anachronistic innuendo, and much more.

Practical Information

The run time for today’s show is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.

The bar will remain open after each show, and we invite you to stay and have a drink with the cast and crew.

    Lasse is a producer and dramaturg with a Bachelor's degree in theater and performance studies from University of Copenhagen. He has served as Assistant Director for many productions at the Odense Teater and Blaagaard Teater in addition to performing several technical roles. Lasse’s interest lies primarily in contemporary musical theater, and he is eager to bring new works to Copenhagen stages and engage with younger audiences.

    Prior to co-founding the CMTC, Rachel served as Chairperson of The Copenhagen Theater Circle. A classically trained Soprano, Rachel has experience both on stage and behind the scenes as Director, Musical Director, and Producer. Having spearheaded the CTC’s annual Fringe Festival for five years, she is committed to engaging with the broader Copenhagen theatrical community and showcasing new and emerging talent. Originally from the US, Rachel is excited to present more musical theater to Copenhagen audiences in English.

Director’s Note

"Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice."

This show has been years in the making.

Before I ever moved to Copenhagen, and long before meeting the wonderful people involved with this production, I had dreamed of creating a show based on Shakespeare’s influence on musical theater.

Shakespeare has been called timeless, but what has always stood out to me is how adaptable Shakespeare’s plays are. The stories, characters, themes, and, yes, even the language, are so powerful they can withstand all sorts of new contexts, each one revealing something new and unexpected.

Doing Shakespeare in Denmark, the land of Elsinore (Helsingør), is a special privilege. In Hamlet, Polonius tells his son to “Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice.”

Far be it from me to contradict the bard, but I am all about sharing our voices, and blending them together into something greater than the sum of its parts.

In the movie Amadeus, Mozart says:

“In a play, if more than one person speaks at once, it’s just noise. But with opera, with music, you can have 20 individuals all talking at the same time. It’s not noise. It’s a perfect harmony!”

You’ll notice this show has very few solo songs. That’s because for me, both musically and dramatically, nothing is better than singing together in harmony.
